🐢 Mississippi Map Turtle Care Guide

The Mississippi Map Turtle is an attractive, active freshwater turtle known for the fine map-like markings across its shell and skin.

They are strong swimmers and enthusiastic baskers, requiring plenty of swimming space, excellent water quality, powerful filtration, a completely dry basking area, heat and high-quality UVB.

One of the most important things to understand about Mississippi Map Turtles is the considerable size difference between males and females.

Adult males generally remain much smaller, while females can become substantially larger.

With correct care, Mississippi Map Turtles can live for 20–30 years or longer, making them a significant long-term commitment.

♂️♀️ How to Tell the Sex

Sexing a Mississippi Map Turtle can be difficult when they are young. The differences become much clearer as the turtle grows and reaches maturity.

🐢 Males

Mature males generally have:

• A noticeably longer and thicker tail
• The cloaca (vent) positioned further down the tail, beyond the edge of the shell
• Much longer claws on the front feet
• A considerably smaller adult body size than females
• A slimmer overall appearance

🐢 Females

Mature females generally have:

• A shorter and thinner tail
• The cloaca positioned closer to the body and shell
• Shorter front claws
• A considerably larger and heavier adult body size
• A broader, more robust appearance

🔍 Tail, Claws & Size

Adult Mississippi Map Turtles show quite noticeable differences between the sexes.

Mature males usually have a longer, thicker tail and noticeably elongated front claws.

Females generally have shorter front claws and a smaller tail and can grow considerably larger than males.

⚠️ Young Mississippi Map Turtles

Young Mississippi Map Turtles can be extremely difficult to sex accurately.

Juveniles may not yet show the obvious differences in tail size, claw length or overall body size seen in mature turtles.

⚠️ Sexing Disclaimer

Please note that Roxy’s Pet Shop is unable to guarantee the sex of any livestock.

Where we provide a suggested sex, this is based on the animal’s visible characteristics, age and our experience at the time. Some animals can be particularly difficult to sex when young.

Any sex stated should therefore be treated as our best assessment and not a guarantee.

📏 Adult Size

Adult size varies considerably between the sexes.

🐢 Males

Adult males commonly reach around:

9–13cm shell length

🐢 Females

Adult females can reach approximately:

15–25cm or more

This difference is extremely important when planning an adult enclosure.

Very young turtles can be difficult to sex accurately, so when buying a youngster you should be prepared for the possibility that it develops into a larger female.

🏠 Housing & Aquarium

Mississippi Map Turtles require a spacious aquatic enclosure.

For a smaller adult male, an aquarium of approximately 150–200 litres or larger can provide a useful starting point.

Larger adult females will require considerably more space, potentially 300 litres or more, depending on the individual turtle and dimensions of the enclosure.

Larger is always preferable.

The enclosure should include:

  • Plenty of open swimming space

  • Powerful filtration

  • Completely dry basking platform

  • Basking heat lamp

  • High-quality UVB

  • Suitable water heating where required

  • Digital thermometers

  • Resting areas

  • Safe decorations

  • Clean, treated water

Always plan for the adult turtle, not simply the small youngster you bring home.

💧 Water Depth

Mississippi Map Turtles are strong aquatic swimmers.

Once appropriately grown and confident, they benefit from relatively deep water and plenty of open swimming space.

Young turtles should still have:

  • Easy access to the surface

  • Resting points

  • Branches or platforms

  • Easy access to the basking area

Increase water depth appropriately as the turtle grows.

The turtle should always be able to reach the surface safely.

🌡️ Water Temperature

Aim for water temperatures generally around:

🌡️ 22–25°C

Young turtles may benefit from temperatures towards the warmer end.

Use a reliable digital aquarium thermometer.

If an aquarium heater is required, make sure it is:

  • Correctly sized

  • Securely installed

  • Protected from the turtle

  • Suitable for the volume of water

Turtles are strong and can damage poorly secured equipment.

☀️ Basking Area

Mississippi Map Turtles are enthusiastic baskers.

They require access to a platform where they can climb completely out of the water and become fully dry.

The basking platform should be:

  • Easy to access

  • Completely dry

  • Stable

  • Large enough for the entire turtle

  • Strong enough to support its weight

  • Positioned underneath heat and UVB

If your turtle grows significantly, remember that its basking area will also need upgrading.

🔥 Basking Temperature

Aim for a basking surface temperature of approximately:

☀️ 30–32°C

Check the actual surface temperature using a digital thermometer or infrared temperature gun.

Make sure your turtle cannot touch the hot bulb.

☀️ UVB – Essential

Correct UVB lighting is essential.

UVB helps your turtle produce vitamin D3 and use calcium properly.

This is extremely important for:

  • Healthy shell development

  • Healthy bones

  • Calcium metabolism

  • Normal growth

Use a good-quality linear UVB lamp appropriate for the enclosure.

UVB should overlap the basking area.

Correct strength and positioning depend on:

  • Lamp being used

  • Distance from the turtle

  • Mesh or covers between the lamp and animal

  • Manufacturer's recommendations

Replace UVB lamps according to the manufacturer's recommended schedule.

A UVB lamp can still produce visible light after its useful UVB output has reduced.

⏰ Lighting Cycle

Provide approximately:

☀️ 12 hours light
🌙 12 hours darkness

Timers make maintaining a consistent routine much easier.

Visible and basking lights should be switched off overnight.

💦 Water Quality

Excellent water quality is extremely important for Map Turtles.

Aquatic turtles:

  • Eat in their water

  • Defecate in their water

  • Disturb substrate

  • Produce substantial waste

Poor water quality can contribute to:

  • Eye problems

  • Skin problems

  • Shell problems

  • Unpleasant smells

  • General poor health

Clear-looking water isn't necessarily clean water.

🔄 Cycling the Aquarium

The aquarium and filtration system should ideally be properly cycled before bringing your turtle home.

Beneficial bacteria inside the filter process waste through the nitrogen cycle:

Ammonia → Nitrite → Nitrate

Aim for:

Ammonia: 0 ppm
Nitrite: 0 ppm

Nitrate is controlled through regular partial water changes and good maintenance.

Cycling can take several weeks.

Simply switching a filter on for a few days doesn't mean the aquarium is cycled.

🧪 Testing Your Water

Regularly test:

  • Ammonia

  • Nitrite

  • Nitrate

  • pH where appropriate

Water testing is particularly useful because harmful waste products aren't always visible.

If ammonia or nitrite is detected, investigate immediately.

🚿 Tap Water

Tap water should be treated with an appropriate aquarium water conditioner/dechlorinator where required.

Always follow the manufacturer's instructions.

🔄 Powerful Filtration

Mississippi Map Turtles require powerful filtration.

Turtles produce considerably more waste than many aquarium fish.

Choose filtration capable of comfortably dealing with more than the aquarium's actual volume.

For larger turtle aquariums, a powerful external canister filter is often an excellent choice.

Good filtration should provide:

  • Mechanical filtration

  • Biological filtration

  • Appropriate water circulation

Even excellent filtration doesn't replace regular water changes.

🧽 Cleaning Your Filter

Beneficial bacteria live inside established biological filter media.

Don't repeatedly sterilise the entire filter.

When appropriate, reusable biological media can be gently rinsed using water removed from the aquarium.

Avoid replacing all established biological media at once unless genuinely necessary.

🚿 Water Changes

Regular partial water changes are essential.

An established aquarium may require around:

20–30% weekly

The actual amount depends on:

  • Water test results

  • Turtle size

  • Aquarium volume

  • Feeding

  • Filtration

  • Waste production

Use water testing to help guide your maintenance schedule.

🪨 Substrate

Suitable options can include:

  • Bare-bottom aquarium

  • Suitable aquarium sand

  • Large smooth stones too big to swallow

Avoid small gravel that could potentially be swallowed.

Anything placed in the aquarium should be safe and appropriately sized.

🪵 Resting Areas

Although Map Turtles are capable swimmers, provide resting opportunities.

Suitable options include:

  • Driftwood

  • Secure branches

  • Platforms

  • Large smooth rocks

  • Plants

These provide enrichment and allow the turtle to rest near the surface.

Make sure nothing can collapse or trap the turtle underwater.

🌿 Enrichment

Mississippi Map Turtles are active animals and benefit from an interesting environment.

Provide:

  • Plenty of open swimming space

  • Driftwood

  • Secure resting platforms

  • Different water depths

  • Safe plants

  • Large smooth rocks

  • Different feeding opportunities

Don't overcrowd the aquarium with decorations.

They still need plenty of room to swim naturally.

🍽️ Feeding Your Mississippi Map Turtle

Mississippi Map Turtles are omnivorous.

Their diet should be varied and age appropriate.

A quality aquatic turtle food can form an important part of the diet alongside suitable fresh foods.

Options can include:

  • Quality aquatic turtle food

  • Earthworms

  • Suitable insects

  • Aquatic invertebrates

  • Snails from safe sources

  • Appropriate plant material

  • Suitable leafy greens

🐌 Snails & Hard Foods

Map Turtles are naturally adapted to eating a range of aquatic prey.

Females in particular develop powerful jaws capable of dealing with harder foods such as molluscs.

Appropriately sourced snails and other suitable aquatic invertebrates can therefore form part of a varied diet.

Never collect prey from areas potentially exposed to:

  • Pesticides

  • Pollution

  • Parasites

  • Chemicals

🥬 Plant Foods

Suitable plant matter can include:

  • Aquatic plants

  • Dandelion greens

  • Suitable leafy greens

  • Other turtle-safe vegetation

Individual preferences vary.

Continue offering appropriate plant foods as part of a varied diet.

🦐 Dried Shrimp

Dried shrimp can be included occasionally, but should not be used as the complete diet.

They don't provide everything your turtle requires when fed alone.

🦴 Calcium

Calcium is essential for:

  • Shell development

  • Bones

  • Muscles

  • Normal growth

Correct calcium provision works alongside appropriate UVB lighting.

Appropriately prepared cuttlefish bone can provide an additional calcium source where suitable.

⏰ How Often Should I Feed?

Feeding frequency depends on age, size and body condition.

🐢 Babies & Young Turtles

Young, growing turtles can generally be offered appropriately sized food daily.

Keep portions sensible and provide variety.

🐢 Juveniles

As growth slows, feeding frequency can gradually reduce.

🐢 Adults

Adults can generally be fed every other day or several times per week, depending on diet, portion size and body condition.

Suitable plant foods can be offered regularly.

Don't feed every time your turtle begs at the glass!

Turtles quickly learn where their food comes from.

⚖️ Body Condition

Monitor:

  • Weight

  • Appetite

  • Activity

  • Shell condition

  • Overall body condition

Excessive fat bulging around the legs can indicate an overweight turtle.

Unexpected weight loss should also be investigated.

✋ Handling

Mississippi Map Turtles are primarily observation pets.

They can be nervous when removed from the water and unnecessary handling can cause stress.

When handling is necessary:

  • Support the whole body

  • Hold securely but gently

  • Keep close to a safe surface

  • Keep fingers away from the mouth

  • Never lift by the tail

  • Wash hands afterwards

😨 Nervous Behaviour

Map Turtles can be relatively wary animals.

A turtle may quickly dive into the water when someone approaches its basking area.

This is normal defensive behaviour.

Provide a secure environment and avoid repeatedly disturbing the turtle while it is basking.

Over time, many individuals become much more accustomed to normal activity around their aquarium.

🐢 Shell Care

A healthy shell should generally be:

  • Firm

  • Intact

  • Free from foul-smelling areas

  • Free from deep sores

  • Free from obvious injuries

Correct:

UVB + basking + calcium + diet + clean water

are all important for healthy shell development.

🧼 Don't Oil the Shell

Don't apply oils, creams or household products to your turtle's shell to make it shiny.

These aren't necessary.

If the shell looks abnormal, investigate the underlying cause.

⚠️ Shell Problems

Watch for:

  • Soft areas

  • Deep pits

  • Foul smell

  • Bleeding

  • Red or inflamed areas

  • Open wounds

  • Unusual patches

  • Areas appearing damaged

Shell abnormalities should be assessed by a reptile/exotics-experienced vet.

👀 Eyes

Healthy eyes should generally be:

  • Clear

  • Open

  • Free from discharge

Persistently swollen or closed eyes can indicate water quality, nutritional, husbandry or health problems.

Don't ignore persistent eye problems.

🩺 Health

A healthy Mississippi Map Turtle should generally:

  • Be alert and active

  • Swim strongly

  • Dive normally

  • Bask regularly

  • Have clear eyes

  • Have a firm shell

  • Feed appropriately

  • Move all four limbs normally

  • Maintain good body condition

Learn what's normal for your individual turtle.

⚠️ Signs to Watch For

Contact a reptile/exotics-experienced vet if you notice:

  • Significant weight loss

  • Persistent refusal to eat

  • Severe lethargy

  • Swollen or closed eyes

  • Nasal discharge

  • Bubbles around the nose

  • Wheezing

  • Open-mouth breathing

  • Swimming unevenly

  • Persistent floating to one side

  • Difficulty diving

  • Soft or damaged shell

  • Foul-smelling shell areas

  • Weakness

  • Swollen limbs

  • Abnormal movement

  • Prolapse

Aquatic turtles can hide illness, so seek advice promptly if something doesn't look right.

🐢 Can Mississippi Map Turtles Live Together?

For most pet homes, individual housing is the safest and simplest option.

Keeping multiple turtles together increases the risk of:

  • Biting

  • Bullying

  • Stress

  • Competition for food

  • Competition for basking space

  • Mating pressure

  • Injuries

It also significantly increases:

  • Space requirements

  • Filtration requirements

  • Waste production

Turtles that appear compatible when young can develop problems as they mature.

Be prepared to permanently separate them if necessary.

🐟 Fish as Tank Mates

Don't add fish expecting them to remain permanent companions.

Your turtle may:

  • Chase them

  • Injure them

  • Eat them

Fish can also introduce parasites or disease.

A turtle-focused aquarium is generally easier to manage.

🦠 Hygiene & Salmonella

Like other reptiles, Mississippi Map Turtles can naturally carry bacteria such as Salmonella without appearing ill.

Always:

  • Wash hands after handling

  • Wash hands after aquarium maintenance

  • Supervise children's hygiene

  • Keep turtle equipment away from food preparation areas

  • Don't clean turtle equipment in kitchen sinks

  • Clean contaminated surfaces appropriately

Never kiss your turtle or allow it near your face or food.

🏡 Bringing Your New Mississippi Map Turtle Home
