🐢 Black Musk Turtle Care Guide
Black Musk Turtles are small aquatic turtles known for their dark colouring, interesting personalities and relatively compact adult size.
They spend the majority of their time in the water, often walking and climbing around the bottom of their enclosure rather than constantly swimming in open water.
Although small compared with many aquatic turtles, they still require a properly filtered aquarium, clean water, basking area, heat and UVB lighting.
Adults are generally around 10–14cm shell length, although individual size can vary.
With correct care, Musk Turtles can live for 30 years or longer, making them a very long-term commitment.
This guide covers the basics you need to keep your Black Musk Turtle happy and healthy.
🏠 Housing & Aquarium
Black Musk Turtles require a spacious, secure aquatic enclosure.
For one adult, we recommend an aquarium of at least around:
120 litres
Larger is always preferable.
Floor space is particularly useful because Musk Turtles spend considerable time exploring the bottom.
The aquarium should include:
-
Plenty of swimming space
-
Powerful filtration
-
Suitable water heating where required
-
Completely dry basking area
-
Basking heat lamp
-
High-quality UVB
-
Digital thermometers
-
Resting points
-
Branches and climbing structures
-
Safe substrate where used
-
Hiding places
-
Clean, treated water
Plan the enclosure for the adult turtle, rather than buying a small tank because your turtle is currently young.
💧 Water Depth
Musk Turtles are aquatic but often spend considerable time walking and climbing underwater.
Young turtles in particular should have easy access to:
-
The water surface
-
Branches
-
Rocks
-
Resting platforms
-
Shallow resting areas
Water depth can be increased as the turtle grows and demonstrates strong swimming ability.
The turtle should never have to struggle to reach the surface.
A well-designed enclosure provides different levels and plenty of opportunities to rest close to the surface.
🌡️ Water Temperature
Aim for water temperatures generally around:
🌡️ 22–25°C
Young turtles may benefit from temperatures towards the warmer end.
Use a reliable digital aquarium thermometer.
If an aquarium heater is required, make sure it is:
-
Correctly sized
-
Securely installed
-
Protected from the turtle
-
Suitable for the aquarium
Musk Turtles are strong and inquisitive and can move poorly secured equipment.
☀️ Basking Area
Although Musk Turtles may bask less obviously than some other aquatic turtles, they should still have access to a completely dry basking area.
The platform should:
-
Be easy to reach
-
Be stable
-
Allow the entire turtle to leave the water
-
Be completely dry on top
-
Sit underneath the heat and UVB
Don't remove the basking facility simply because you rarely see your turtle using it.
🔥 Basking Temperature
Aim for a basking surface temperature of approximately:
☀️ 30–32°C
Use a digital thermometer or infrared temperature gun to check the actual surface temperature.
The basking lamp should provide warmth without creating a burn risk.
Make sure the turtle cannot touch the bulb.
☀️ UVB – Essential
We recommend providing high-quality UVB lighting.
UVB supports vitamin D3 production, calcium metabolism and healthy shell and bone development.
The UVB should overlap the basking area.
Correct positioning depends on:
-
UVB lamp being used
-
Distance from the turtle
-
Mesh or covers between lamp and animal
-
Manufacturer's recommendations
Replace UVB lamps according to the manufacturer's recommended schedule.
Remember that a lamp can continue producing visible light after its useful UVB output has declined.
⏰ Lighting Cycle
Provide approximately:
☀️ 12 hours of light
🌙 12 hours of darkness
Using timers makes maintaining a consistent routine much easier.
Visible lighting should be switched off overnight.
💦 Water Quality
Excellent water quality is extremely important.
Aquatic turtles:
-
Eat in their water
-
Defecate in their water
-
Disturb substrate
-
Produce large amounts of waste
Poor water quality can contribute to:
-
Eye problems
-
Skin problems
-
Shell problems
-
Unpleasant smells
-
General poor health
Water can look clear while still containing harmful waste products.
Regular testing is important.
🔄 Tank Cycling
The aquarium and filter should ideally be properly cycled before your turtle comes home.
A mature biological filter contains beneficial bacteria that process waste.
The basic cycle is:
Ammonia → Nitrite → Nitrate
Aim for:
Ammonia: 0 ppm
Nitrite: 0 ppm
Nitrate is controlled through appropriate water changes and maintenance.
Cycling isn't simply running the filter for a couple of days.
It can take several weeks for a biological filter to establish properly.
Use an appropriate aquarium water test kit.
🚿 Tap Water
Tap water should be treated with a suitable aquarium water conditioner/dechlorinator where required.
Chlorine and chloramine can interfere with the aquarium environment and biological filtration.
Always follow the product instructions.
🔄 Filtration
Musk Turtles require strong filtration.
Turtles produce considerably more waste than many aquarium fish.
Choose a filter capable of comfortably dealing with more than the aquarium's stated volume.
Suitable options can include:
-
External canister filters
-
Powerful internal filtration
-
Appropriate combinations of filtration
For larger setups, an external filter can be particularly useful.
Good filtration should provide both mechanical and biological filtration.
A filter does not remove the need for regular water changes.
🧽 Cleaning Your Filter
Don't repeatedly sterilise your entire filter.
Beneficial bacteria live within established biological filter media.
When appropriate, reusable biological media can be gently rinsed using water removed from the aquarium.
Avoid washing all biological media under untreated tap water or replacing everything at once unless genuinely necessary.
This can damage the biological cycle.
🚿 Water Changes
Regular partial water changes are essential.
An established aquarium may require around 20–30% weekly, but this should be adjusted according to:
-
Water test results
-
Aquarium size
-
Turtle size
-
Feeding
-
Filtration
-
Amount of waste
Smaller or more heavily stocked tanks may require more frequent maintenance.
🪨 Substrate
Suitable options include:
-
Bare-bottom aquarium
-
Suitable sand
-
Large smooth stones that cannot be swallowed
Avoid small gravel that could potentially be swallowed.
Any rocks used should be considerably too large for your turtle to ingest.
🪵 Climbing & Resting Areas
This is particularly important for Musk Turtles.
Provide underwater structures such as:
-
Driftwood
-
Cork where appropriate
-
Large smooth rocks
-
Secure branches
-
Platforms
-
Plants
These allow the turtle to climb towards the surface rather than constantly swimming vertically.
Make sure nothing can collapse or trap the turtle underwater.
🏚️ Hiding Areas
Musk Turtles appreciate cover.
Suitable hiding opportunities can include:
-
Secure caves
-
Driftwood
-
Plants
-
Large rocks
-
Purpose-made aquatic hides
Any cave must be large enough that the turtle cannot become wedged inside.
Never create an underwater space where the turtle could become trapped and unable to reach the surface.
🌿 Enrichment
A Musk Turtle should have an interesting environment to explore.
Provide different:
-
Water depths
-
Textures
-
Resting areas
-
Hides
-
Climbing routes
-
Plants
-
Feeding opportunities
Rearranging some safe decorations occasionally can provide additional enrichment.
🍽️ Feeding Your Black Musk Turtle
Musk Turtles are omnivorous but strongly carnivorous, particularly when young.
A quality aquatic turtle food can form an important part of the diet alongside varied suitable foods.
Options can include:
-
Quality aquatic turtle food
-
Earthworms
-
Suitable insects
-
Aquatic invertebrates
-
Snails from safe sources
-
Other appropriate turtle foods
-
Suitable plant matter
Variety is important.
🪱 Animal-Based Foods
Suitable foods can include:
-
Earthworms
-
Appropriate insects
-
Suitable aquatic invertebrates
-
Other properly sourced turtle foods
Avoid feeding wild prey collected from areas where pesticides, parasites or pollutants may be present.
🥬 Plant Foods
Plant material can also be offered.
Suitable options can include:
-
Aquatic plants
-
Dandelion greens
-
Suitable leafy greens
Some Musk Turtles show much more interest in animal foods than vegetation, especially when young.
Continue offering an appropriate varied diet.
🦐 Dried Shrimp
Many turtles absolutely love dried shrimp.
However, dried shrimp should not become the entire diet.
They don't provide everything required for long-term health when fed alone.
Think of them as part of a varied feeding plan rather than the only food.
🦴 Calcium
Calcium is essential for healthy:
-
Shell development
-
Bones
-
Muscles
-
Growth
Correct calcium provision works alongside suitable UVB lighting.
Appropriately prepared cuttlefish bone can provide an additional calcium source where suitable.
⏰ How Often Should I Feed?
Feeding frequency depends on age, size and body condition.
🐢 Young Musk Turtles
Young, growing turtles can generally be offered appropriately sized food daily.
Keep portions sensible.
🐢 Juveniles
Feeding frequency can gradually reduce as growth slows.
🐢 Adults
Adults can generally be fed around every other day or several times per week, depending on portion size, diet and body condition.
Don't assume a turtle needs feeding every time it approaches the front of the tank!
Aquatic turtles quickly learn where their food comes from.
⚖️ Body Condition
Monitor your turtle's overall condition rather than feeding according to begging behaviour.
Watch for:
-
Unexpected weight loss
-
Excessive fat around the legs
-
Changes in appetite
-
Changes in activity
-
Shell condition
Overfeeding can cause health problems.
😠 Musk Turtle Attitude!
Don't let their small size fool you.
Musk Turtles can be surprisingly feisty.
Some individuals are calm while others may:
-
Open their mouth defensively
-
Attempt to bite
-
Scratch
-
Struggle when picked up
This is one reason handling should be kept to a minimum.
👃 Why Are They Called Musk Turtles?
Musk Turtles get their name from their ability to release a strong-smelling musk when frightened or threatened.
This is a natural defence mechanism.
A frightened turtle may produce the smell when handled.
Keeping handling to a minimum reduces unnecessary stress.
✋ Handling
Musk Turtles are best considered observation pets.
Handle only when necessary.
When you do need to move your turtle:
-
Support the body securely
-
Keep fingers away from the mouth
-
Keep close to a safe surface
-
Never lift by the tail
-
Wash your hands afterwards
Never deliberately provoke your turtle into biting or producing musk.
🐢 Shell Care
A healthy shell should generally be:
-
Firm
-
Intact
-
Free from deep sores
-
Free from foul-smelling areas
-
Free from obvious injuries
Correct:
UVB + basking + calcium + diet + clean water
all contribute to healthy shell development.
🧼 Don't Oil the Shell
Don't routinely apply oils, creams or household products to your turtle's shell.
These aren't required for a healthy turtle.
If the shell looks abnormal, investigate the cause rather than trying to make it look shiny.
⚠️ Shell Problems
Watch for:
-
Soft areas
-
Deep pits
-
Foul smell
-
Bleeding
-
Red or inflamed areas
-
Open wounds
-
Unusual patches
-
Areas that appear damaged or rotten
Shell abnormalities should be assessed by a reptile/exotics-experienced vet.
👀 Eyes
Healthy eyes should normally be:
-
Clear
-
Open
-
Free from discharge
Persistently swollen or closed eyes can indicate water quality, nutritional, husbandry or health problems.
Don't ignore persistent eye problems.
🩺 Health
A healthy Musk Turtle should generally:
-
Be alert when active
-
Swim normally
-
Walk and climb underwater
-
Have clear eyes
-
Maintain a firm shell
-
Feed appropriately
-
Move all four limbs normally
-
Maintain healthy body condition
Learn what's normal for your individual turtle.
⚠️ Signs to Watch For
Contact a reptile/exotics-experienced vet if you notice:
-
Significant weight loss
-
Persistent refusal to eat
-
Severe lethargy
-
Swollen or closed eyes
-
Nasal discharge
-
Bubbles around the nose
-
Wheezing
-
Open-mouth breathing
-
Swimming unevenly
-
Persistent floating to one side
-
Difficulty diving
-
Soft or damaged shell
-
Foul-smelling shell areas
-
Weakness
-
Swollen limbs
-
Abnormal movement
-
Prolapse
Turtles can hide illness, so don't wait until your turtle becomes severely unwell.
♂️♀️ How to Tell the Sex
Sexing a Black Musk Turtle can be difficult when they are young. The differences between males and females usually become much clearer as the turtle matures.
🐢 Males
Adult males generally have:
• A noticeably longer and thicker tail
• A thicker tail base
• The cloaca (vent) positioned further down the tail, away from the edge of the shell
• More obvious rough, scale-like areas on the inside of the hind legs in mature males
🐢 Females
Adult females generally have:
• A shorter, thinner tail
• A less bulky tail base
• The cloaca positioned much closer to the body and edge of the shell
• A tendency to become slightly larger and heavier than males
🔍 The Tail Is the Best Clue
The tail is usually the easiest way to tell mature males and females apart.
A mature male's tail is noticeably longer and thicker, whereas a female's tail is shorter and slimmer.
Very young Black Musk Turtles can be extremely difficult to sex accurately, so don't rely on sexing small juveniles.
As the turtle matures, the differences become much easier to see.
⚠️ Please Note
Sex cannot always be guaranteed in young turtles. If purchasing a juvenile, be prepared for its sex to become apparent only as it grows and matures.
🐢 Can Musk Turtles Live Together?
We generally recommend individual housing as the safest and simplest option.
Keeping multiple turtles together can lead to:
-
Biting
-
Bullying
-
Competition for food
-
Competition for basking areas
-
Stress
-
Mating pressure
-
Serious injuries
Adult males in particular can be problematic together.
Even turtles that have lived together peacefully can develop problems as they mature.
Individual housing also makes monitoring feeding and health much easier.
🐟 Can I Keep Fish With My Musk Turtle?
Don't buy fish expecting them to remain permanent tank mates.
A Musk Turtle may eventually:
-
Chase them
-
Injure them
-
Eat them
Fish can also introduce parasites or disease.
A species-focused turtle setup is generally easier to manage safely.
🦠 Hygiene & Salmonella
Like other reptiles, Musk Turtles can naturally carry bacteria such as Salmonella without appearing ill.
Always:
-
Wash hands after handling
-
Wash hands after aquarium maintenance
-
Supervise children's hygiene
-
Keep turtle equipment away from food preparation areas
-
Don't clean turtle equipment in kitchen sinks
-
Clean contaminated surfaces appropriately
Never kiss your turtle or allow it near your face or food.
🏡 Bringing Your New Black Musk Turtle Home
