🐦 Bengalese Finch Care Guide

Bengalese Finches, also known as Society Finches, are small, gentle and sociable birds. They are popular pets because of their peaceful nature, attractive colours and interesting social behaviour.

They are generally best suited to people who enjoy watching their birds rather than regularly handling them.

With the correct care, Bengalese Finches can live for around 5–10 years, sometimes longer.

This guide covers the basics you need to keep your Bengalese Finches happy and healthy.

♂️♀️ How to Tell the Sex

Bengalese Finches can be difficult to sex because males and females usually look extremely similar.

Unlike some finch species, there are generally no reliable differences in plumage colour between the sexes.

🐦 Males

Male Bengalese Finches generally:

• Look very similar to females
• Sing a more developed and recognisable song
• May perform a courtship display while singing
• Often stretch upwards, fluff their feathers and move or bounce while displaying

🐦 Females

Female Bengalese Finches generally:

• Look extremely similar to males
• Usually make calls and chirps rather than the developed song associated with males
• Don't normally perform the same singing courtship display as mature males
• Cannot reliably be identified by colour or markings alone

🎵 Singing Is the Best Clue

Singing and courtship behaviour are among the most useful ways of identifying a male Bengalese Finch.

A mature male will usually produce a more complex song and may perform a characteristic courtship display at the same time.

Females can still be vocal, so simple chirping or calling shouldn't be confused with a male's full song.

🧬 DNA Sexing

Where a more reliable determination is required, DNA sexing can be carried out.

This is particularly useful with young birds or individuals that haven't displayed clear adult behaviour.

🐣 Young Bengalese Finches

Young Bengalese Finches can be particularly difficult to sex.

It may be necessary to wait until they mature and begin displaying adult singing and courtship behaviour before making an assessment.

⚠️ Sexing Disclaimer

Please note that Roxy’s Pet Shop is unable to guarantee the sex of any livestock.

Where we provide a suggested sex, this is based on the bird’s behaviour, visible characteristics, age and our experience at the time.

Where greater certainty is required, we recommend DNA sexing.

Any sex stated should therefore be treated as our best assessment and not a guarantee.

🏠 Housing & Cage

Bengalese Finches are active birds and need plenty of room to fly.

A wide cage is more important than a tall, narrow cage, as finches exercise by flying horizontally between perches.

For a pair, we recommend a cage of at least around 75cm wide × 45cm deep × 45cm high, with a larger flight cage always being preferable.

If keeping a group, considerably more space will be required.

Cage setup should include:

  • Natural wooden perches of different thicknesses

  • Food dishes

  • Fresh drinking water

  • A bird bath

  • A calcium/mineral source

  • Safe enrichment

  • A suitable cage liner that can be changed regularly

Avoid overcrowding the cage with toys and perches. Your finches should have clear areas where they can fly freely from one end of the cage to the other.

Position the cage in a bright, comfortable area away from draughts, radiators, kitchens and intense direct sunlight.

🐦 One Bengalese Finch or Two?

Bengalese Finches are highly social birds and should not normally be kept alone.

We recommend keeping at least a compatible pair so they have companionship.

They can also live successfully in small groups where sufficient space and resources are provided.

Bengalese Finches are generally known for their peaceful nature, but you should still watch for bullying or birds being prevented from accessing food and water.

If keeping males and females together, remember that they may attempt to breed.

❤️ Behaviour & Personality

Bengalese Finches are generally gentle and sociable little birds.

They are often:

  • Peaceful

  • Social

  • Active

  • Curious

  • Gentle

  • Relatively quiet

  • Enjoyable to watch

They often spend considerable time interacting with their companions, feeding, bathing, preening and flying between perches.

Their gentle nature is one of the reasons they have become such popular aviary and pet birds.

🌾 Feeding Your Bengalese Finches

A good diet is essential for keeping Bengalese Finches healthy.

A balanced diet can include:

  • A quality foreign finch seed mixture or suitable formulated finch diet

  • Fresh vegetables

  • Suitable leafy greens

  • Small amounts of suitable fruit

  • Fresh drinking water every day

  • A calcium/mineral source

Suitable fresh foods can include broccoli, carrot, peas and suitable leafy greens.

Small amounts of suitable fruit such as berries, melon and apple with the seeds removed can also be offered.

Introduce unfamiliar foods gradually.

Some finches may initially ignore a new food, so don't give up after the first attempt.

🥚 Egg Food

Suitable egg food can be offered as part of a varied diet.

It can be particularly useful during periods of increased nutritional demand, including:

  • Moulting

  • Breeding

  • Egg laying

  • Rearing chicks

Breeding birds have additional nutritional requirements and should be managed appropriately.

❌ Foods to Avoid

Never give your Bengalese Finches:

  • Avocado

  • Chocolate

  • Alcohol

  • Caffeine

  • Foods containing xylitol

  • Apple seeds

  • Fruit stones/pits

  • Very salty foods

  • Very sugary foods

  • Highly processed human foods

Fresh food should be removed after a few hours so it doesn't spoil.

💧 Water

Fresh, clean drinking water must be available at all times.

Water should be checked and refreshed every day, and drinking containers should be cleaned regularly.

Finches can easily contaminate their water with seed, food and droppings.

If several birds share an enclosure, providing more than one drinking point can be useful.

🛁 Bathing

Bengalese Finches usually love bathing.

Offer a shallow bird bath regularly with fresh, clean water.

Bathing helps with normal feather maintenance and is particularly appreciated during moulting.

In a group, don't be surprised if one bird jumping into the bath encourages everybody else to join in!

Remove dirty bath water once the birds have finished.

🌿 Perches & Enrichment

Bengalese Finches don't usually play with toys in the same way as parrots, but they still require an interesting environment.

Provide:

  • Natural branches

  • Perches of different safe thicknesses

  • Swings

  • Bathing opportunities

  • Safe natural enrichment

  • Plenty of flying space

Avoid filling every part of the enclosure with accessories.

For finches, space to fly is one of the most important forms of exercise and enrichment.

🪽 Exercise & Flying

Bengalese Finches are active birds.

A suitably sized flight cage or aviary is ideal because it allows them to fly naturally throughout the day.

If they are allowed out of their enclosure, the room must be completely secure.

Before allowing birds to fly:

  • Close all windows and external doors

  • Turn off ceiling fans

  • Make large windows and mirrors obvious

  • Keep other pets safely away

  • Remove access to open water

  • Remove hot objects and other hazards

Finches can be difficult to catch without causing unnecessary stress, so providing plenty of exercise within a spacious flight cage is often the most practical option.

🧹 Cleaning

Good hygiene is very important.

Every day:

  • Change drinking water

  • Remove spoiled fresh food

  • Check food bowls

  • Remove heavily soiled areas

  • Check the general condition of the cage

Regularly:

  • Change the cage liner

  • Wash food and water containers

  • Clean the bird bath

  • Clean perches

  • Thoroughly clean the cage

Always use a bird-safe cleaning product and rinse appropriately.

😴 Sleep

Bengalese Finches need approximately 10–12 hours of quiet and darkness each night.

At night, the room should be calm and free from unnecessary disturbance.

A cage cover can be used where appropriate, provided there is still good ventilation and the birds are comfortable with it.

🪶 Moulting

Bengalese Finches naturally replace old feathers through moulting.

During a normal moult you may notice:

  • More feathers around the cage

  • New feathers developing

  • Increased preening

  • Slightly reduced activity

  • Birds temporarily appearing less tidy

Provide a balanced diet, bathing opportunities and plenty of rest during this period.

A normal moult should not result in large bald patches.

If you notice significant feather loss, damaged skin or a bird that appears unwell, seek advice from an avian or bird-experienced vet.

🤲 Handling

Bengalese Finches are generally not considered handling birds.

They are usually happiest living with other finches and being watched rather than regularly picked up.

Unnecessary catching and handling can cause considerable stress.

Handling may occasionally be necessary for health checks, moving birds or veterinary treatment, but should always be carried out calmly and carefully.

🪺 Nesting & Breeding

Bengalese Finches are well known for being enthusiastic breeders and attentive parents.

If you do not intend to breed your birds, there is generally no need to provide a nest or nesting material.

Keeping males and females together and providing nests can encourage breeding.

If you intend to breed Bengalese Finches, research their requirements properly beforehand.

Breeding birds require:

  • Suitable accommodation

  • A suitable nest

  • Appropriate nesting material

  • Additional nutritional support

  • Calcium availability

  • Careful monitoring of parents and chicks

Bengalese Finches are also well known among bird keepers for sometimes fostering the chicks of other finch species, but this is a specialist aspect of bird breeding and shouldn't be attempted without suitable experience.

🩺 Health

Small birds can hide signs of illness extremely well.

A healthy Bengalese Finch should generally be:

  • Bright and alert

  • Active

  • Social

  • Regularly flying between perches

  • Eating and drinking normally

  • Clean around the eyes and nostrils

  • Well feathered

  • Interested in its surroundings

Because these birds are naturally social, a bird that suddenly separates itself from the group deserves particular attention.

⚠️ Signs to Watch For

Contact an avian or bird-experienced vet if you notice:

  • Sitting fluffed up for prolonged periods

  • Staying on the cage floor

  • Unusual sleepiness or weakness

  • Reduced appetite

  • Significant changes in drinking

  • Noticeable changes in droppings

  • Breathing difficulties

  • Tail bobbing while breathing

  • Discharge around the eyes or nostrils

  • Loss of balance

  • Sudden weight loss

  • Significant feather loss

  • A bird repeatedly separating itself from its companions

Small birds can deteriorate quickly, so don't delay seeking veterinary advice if one of your finches appears genuinely unwell.

⚖️ Monitoring Weight

Regular weighing can help identify health problems early.

Accurate gram scales are useful for monitoring small birds.

Try to weigh your finches under similar conditions each time and keep a simple record.

A sudden or continuing change in weight should be investigated.

🐦 Keeping a Group

Bengalese Finches can be excellent birds for a small group or aviary where sufficient space is provided.

When keeping several birds:

  • Provide plenty of flying space

  • Provide multiple feeding points

  • Provide multiple drinking points

  • Avoid overcrowding

  • Watch for bullying

  • Make sure every bird can access food and water

  • Introduce new birds carefully

Even peaceful birds can occasionally disagree, particularly around food, nests or during breeding periods.

🌡️ Keeping Your Bengalese Finches Comfortable

Keep your finches in a stable environment without sudden temperature changes.

Avoid positioning the cage next to:

  • Open windows

  • Frequently opened exterior doors

  • Air-conditioning units

  • Radiators

  • Fires

  • Areas of intense direct sunlight

Good ventilation is important, but avoid constant cold draughts.

⚠️ Household Dangers

Birds have extremely sensitive respiratory systems.

Keep your Bengalese Finches away from:

  • Cigarette and vape smoke

  • Aerosol sprays

  • Air fresheners

  • Strong cleaning fumes

  • Paint and solvent fumes

  • Scented candles

  • Heavy fragrances

Also watch for:

  • Open windows and doors

  • Hot drinks

  • Open water

  • Unsafe houseplants

  • Other household pets

🍳 Important – Kitchens & Non-Stick Cookware

We strongly recommend not keeping Bengalese Finches in the kitchen.

Cooking presents numerous dangers including hot pans, boiling water, steam and smoke.

Of particular concern are fumes produced when certain PTFE/non-stick coated products are overheated. These fumes can be extremely dangerous and potentially fatal to birds.

🐦 Bringing Your New Bengalese Finches Home

Moving to a new home can be stressful.

For the first few days:

  • Keep their surroundings calm

  • Avoid unnecessary handling

  • Make sure they can easily locate food and water

  • Avoid repeatedly moving the cage

  • Give them plenty of rest

  • Keep sudden noises and disturbances to a minimum

  • Watch from a distance to ensure every bird is eating and drinking

It's normal for new Bengalese Finches to initially be quieter or more nervous.

Give them time to become familiar with their surroundings.
